Dr Pappalardo began her medical studies at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, where she was awarded an MBBS with First Class Honours and a University Medal in Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane before undertaking her ophthalmology residency at the City Eye Centre and the Mater Adult’s and Mater Children’s Hospitals in Brisbane.
Dr Pappalardo then underwent specialist Ophthalmology training, rotating through major ophthalmology units within Brisbane and the Gold Coast. During her training, she was awarded the prestigious Filipic Greer Medal for overall outstanding performance in Ophthalmic Pathology in Australia and New Zealand.
Throughout her Fellowship, Dr Pappalardo has undertaken further training in the correct assessment and meticulous surgical management of pterygium with Professor Lawrence Hirst, the pioneer of the P.E.R.F.E.C.T for PTERYGIUM ® procedure, and this is a particular area of interest she maintains.
She has additionally undergone sub-specialist training in adult and paediatric medical retina and inherited retinal diseases/ophthalmic genetics at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth under the mentorship of Dr Fred Chen. She has experience in ocular oncology, furthered through training at the Queensland Ocular Oncology Service.
Dr Pappalardo consults privately at Valley Eye Specialists in Fortitude Valley, and is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Queensland Children’s Hospital where she provides an Ocular Genetics service and actively participates in registrar teaching.
Having recently published in international journals in the field of ocular genetics, Dr Pappalardo maintains a keen and ongoing interest in research. She also likes to attempt to balance out her busy weeks by spending time with her husband four children – mostly by enjoying the great outdoors.

Dr Reader studied medicine at Flinders University of South Australia graduating in 1985. After a number of years as a RAAF medical officer, he completed training as a commercial pilot and worked in general aviation. Following this, he undertook a post graduate fellowship in aviation medicine in which he has an ongoing interest. He completed his ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital and in Plymouth, UK. Upon returning from overseas Dr Reader worked as a general ophthalmologist in Sydney before relocating to Queensland. Dr Reader is a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and the Australian Society of Aerospace Medicine.
Dr Reader regularly attends both local and overseas ophthalmic meetings, as well as giving regular clinical updates to Optometrists and General Practitioners.

Dr Slaughter graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 1997 and undertook her residency training throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory. In 2006 Dr Kate Slaughter completed her advanced training in Ophthalmology in Queensland. She completed a fellowship in Cataract and Anterior Segment Surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and had further experience working as a Senior Fellow in Exeter, United Kingdom.
Dr Slaughter is a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists RANZCO) and The Australasian Society of Cataracts and Refraction Surgeon (AUSCRS). She regularly attends national and international meetings to keep up to date with the latest advances in Ophthalmology.
Dr Slaughter worked as a visiting Medical Officer at the Princess Alexandra Hospital 2009-2017 and was awarded RANZCO Trainer of Excellence award in 2010. She was also Director of Training for RANZCO Queensland 2010-2016.

Dr Smith was a graduate of the University of Queensland Medical School in 1997 and spent his residency training in Northern Queensland and Brisbane. He has achieved a Masters in Science research degree in Anatomy at Trinity College in Dublin for which he received a Trinity College Post-Graduate Award. He completed his advanced training in Ophthalmology in Queensland in 2007. Following this he had further fellowship training in Oculoplastic surgery in the UK at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Dr Smith is a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and the Australasian Society of Cataracts and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS). He regularly attends and has presented at national and international conferences. Dr Smith was a Medical Officer at the Princess Alexandra Hospital 2009-2016. He has been actively involved in the teaching of registrars and medical students and was awarded a RANZCO Trainer of Excellence in 2010.
He was on the organising committee for RANZCO QLD Branch annual conference between 2010-2016. He was young fellow representative RANZCO QLD branch 2010-2014.
