Associate Professor Hugh McGregor is a specialist general surgeon with a national and international reputation in hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Queensland and currently serves as President of the Australia & New Zealand Hernia Society (ANZ Hernia).

His practice is focused on the management of simple, complex, recurrent, and chronic pain–related hernia conditions, with a particular expertise in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) techniques and advanced abdominal wall surgery. He is the leading Australian expert in the treatment of chronic groin pain and post-hernia repair pain syndromes. He also has extensive experience in proctology, having performed over 6000 surgeries for haemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures and the like. He has extensive experience in all facets of general surgery and performs endoscopy and colonoscopy weekly.

He is an expert on two robotic platforms, the Da Vinci system and Hugo RAS. He uses these to perform difficult and complex hernia surgeries and surgeries for chronic pain. Associate Professor McGregor completed his medical degree with honours at The University of Queensland and holds a PhD from Monash University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He is widely recognised for his leadership in hernia surgery and is actively involved in national and international collaborative research programs.

His academic interests include surgical outcomes, chronic groin pain, and optimisation of hernia repair techniques. In his role as President of ANZ Hernia, Associate Professor McGregor is actively involved in shaping standards of care, education, and research across Australia and New Zealand. He regularly contributes to professional education through teaching, mentoring, conference faculty and convenor roles, and invited presentations. Associate Professor McGregor is known for his patient-centred approach, easy going down to earth manner and commitment to his patients.
